The island of Koh Samui
has transformed from a simple island of fishing, coconut farming, rice

approximately 40,000 and is located mainly in and around the 6 main

p.m. and lasts until the wee hours of the morning. The big dance floor
throbs with a crowd sweating it out to the latest disco tunes. But you
can also have an
open space with tables just a little farther from the main dance floor.
The popular Reggae Pub
in Chaweng, noted for its logo which shows the face of Bob Marley.
Reggae music (what else) is the fixture here and a live band leads you
to wild dancing.
And at Lamai beach, you have the main party place - Bauhaus. Screens
showing live sport events capture some people but it is because Bauhaus
is for everyone's enjoyment. The place sets a different theme on certain
days and there is also a night for your dancing shoes to be polished
since true-blue underground music will charm you.
Cabaret
Cabaret shows are relatively new in the Samui scene. But slowly, the
shows are gaining adherents both locals and foreigners. The show is
patterned over the elaborate musicals and features songs and dances
(with a mixture of Chinese and American songs and including classical
and modern Thai dances) spiced up with gags by popular comedy acts as
available on the island.
The glamour of the performers are probably the main attraction, though.
These performers excite the audience with their glittering costumes,
made to complement the dazing production designs.

The Beach Pub at Secret Garden has become one of South East Asia's

instruments and professional staff on the engineering side. These
sessions take place
every Sunday afternoon from 4p.m. until 8p.m. and usually attracts a
crowd of 2 to 3 hundred people, all in a party mood.
Beaches:
Most beaches has white sand and are
fringed with coconut palms. Many resorts
and hotels are located just a couple of
meters from the beach. The most popular
are:
Chaweng Beach
A 7 km long beach in the North-East of
Samui. The most well-known and
developed, but also one of the best. You
can rent anything from a simple
bungalows to a five star hotel room
here. There are plenty of high standard
resorts here. The sand is invitingly
white, but it can be a lot of people
here, especially at high season.
Lamai Beach
Not far as long as Chaweng but more
quite and some people would say
charming. The Southern part of the beach
is somehow more inviting than the
Northern, because there are not so much
stones and corals there. Lamai is
located in South-East of Samui, about 10
kilometers South of Chaweng. A little
North of Lamai you will find Ao Tong
Takian beach. It has became rather
popular, and a few resorts are located
there.
Maenam, Big Buddha and Bo Phut
Beaches:
In the North of Samui you will find
these fine beaches. You will also find
the small but very beautiful Chong Mon
beach in the North-East and Bang Por
beach in the North-West. They are not as
crowded as Chaweng and Lamai. A large
range of hotels and bungalows are found
here and it is close to the Airport,
Pier(s) and Big Buddha too.
Helpful Hints:
Getting around Samui is simple and
inexpensive. The most common method
is by truck taxis called Songtaos
and the fares range from 20 baht and
up depending on your destination.
The fares increase at night,
especially after midnight, so always
agree to a price before getting in.
There are plenty of motorbikes to
rent around the island for about 150
baht per day, while jeeps and cars
can be rented from 800 baht and
higher, depending on the make and
model. You can also get very good
monthly and yearly rates if you
plan to stay in Samui for longer
term.
Tipping is not expected in Thailand,
but leaving a small amount is a nice
gesture if you received good
service.
Bargaining is not practiced in
Restaurants, Bars, Supermarkets,
Department Stores, Pharmacies and
Public Transport (except taxis and
tuk tuks).
Most independent business owners
from Jewelry stores to street
vendors are open to bargaining and
generally start prices very high.
Always remember to bargain in a
friendly manner and have fun as you
will get better prices in the end.
